CHAPTER ONE
- INTRODUCTION
The student industrial work experience scheme ( SIWES) is the acceptable skills training programme which forms part of the minimum academic standard in various degree programmes for Nigerians / Universities institutions. It is an effort to bridge the existing between theoretical knowledge with practical in science, technology and other professional/ educational programmes offered in Nigeria tertiary institutions.
SIWES technical training widens the student’s knowledge and experience both morally and intellecturally, prior to the practical and innovating training acquired fduring the period of the programme which is functionally rewrding and interesting.
- Definition of SIWES.
SIWES is a programme initiated some year s ago to student in tertiary institutions of learnig in Nigeria such as universities , polytechnic and colleges of education, technical schools and any institution running diploma programme.
It is an inevitable programme needed to be successfully completed by the student because it is part of the part of the national board of technical education (NBTE) Schem of work before the student could be awarded the national diploma (ND) Certificate and Higher National diploma certificate.
- AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF SIWES
Specifically, the aims and objectives of SIWES are to
- Provide an avenue for students in Nigerian universities/ institutions to acquire industrial skills and experience on their course of study
- Prepare student for the work situation they are likely to face after graduation .
- Expose students to work method andtechniques in handling equipment and machinery not available in their institutions.
- Expose student with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real work situation.
