Description
Leaving a distressed baby to cry on a regular basis could damage the brain development. To overcome this problems a baby cry monitoring system is built.
This work is aimed at building a portable, efficient and cost effective automatic infant’s cry detector with real time monitoring system for employed parents. The cry detection algorithm was developed according to the crying signals and it is segmented using the short time energy function which is used as a voice activity detector. The device detects an infant’s crying immediately sends notification to warn parents / caregiver via GSM (SMS) notification.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Infant cry is the first verbal communication of new born baby with the world. The crying of the infant is a common phenomenon and probably one of the most difficult problems which parents have to face when taking care of a baby.
Infant care has become a challenge to many families in their daily life, as we can see in Nigeria father need to go for work daily leaving mother at home taking care of the home activities as well as children, therefore more stress is on mothers. And also baby crying is one of the everyday situations that take attention of the mother, because in most cases mothers need to leave their babies alone to attend other activities of the home [1]. If a system is developed which notify mothers whenever their babies are crying and they are far from them it will be of great help to such mothers as they can work in favorable environment. Also urgent situations can be quickly notify and handle within shorter time. Usually, when a young baby cries, the cause is one of the following things i.e. they are hungry, tired, not feeling well or need their diaper changed. So by developing a prototype project which can monitor the presence of cry from the babies, and wireless alarm notify the parent for the baby cry [2].
Many home-care systems are available but majority of this system are specially designed for the aged people and patients. These systems can monitor their health status, automatically send out emergency signals, and have other functions. However, the caring methods for infants are not the same. Children require different type of care because they are totally dependent for their normal functions on someone else. Infants cannot give any feedback about their discomfort or health complaints. Infants cannot express themselves like old people, e. g when an infant has a fever, he/she can only express his/her discomfort by crying [5]. Hence, a home-care system specially designed for infants is today’s need which would substantially lighten parents’ especially mother’s burden. In support of this requirement many research papers and patents for healthcare application are studied with the intention of possible solutions to take care of the infant [4].
This proposed system is to design and construct the baby monitoring system with wireless notification (baby cry detection) which gives peace of mind to loved ones when they are away from their infant as they can get an update status of their condition. The other advantage is the programmability of alarm conditions which can be activated in any accuracy through a normal condenser microphone.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The cry of an infant is a biological siren to alert for the care giving environment about their needs to motivate the listener to respond. Most of the times, caretaker’s advocates‟ follow strict routines to train the child for regular feeding, waking and sleeping pattern without considering their emotional and physical needs. Researchers have found babies whose cries are usually ignored will not develop healthy intellectual and social skills [5].On the other hand, leaving a distressed baby to cry on a regular basis could damage the brain development. To overcome this problems a baby cry monitoring system is built. This device is designed for an affordable cost and it can be used from birth to 12 months
of babies with ability to detect the infant’s crying immediately and send notification to warn parents / caregiver via GSM (SMS) notification.
1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
1.3.1 AIM
The aim of the project is to design and construct arduino based intelligent baby cry detection with wireless alert.
1.3.2 OBJECTIVES
- To build the system prototype.
- To study and develop a programming system for the microcontroller.

- To design and construct a wireless alarm unit for notifying the user of baby crying
- To design a system that will reduce stress to the mothers at home.
1.4 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The cry detection algorithm has developed according to the crying signals and it is segmented using the short time energy function which is used as a voice activity detector.
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Baby monitoring systems with wireless notification will serve as a means of providing real-time monitoring of a baby’s well-being, allowing parents to stay informed and respond quickly to potential issues, even from a distance, enhancing safety and peace of mind.
This system can alert parents to potential problems, such as excessive crying, allowing for timely intervention. Knowing that they can monitor their baby from a distance can significantly reduce parental anxiety and stress, especially during the initial stages of parenthood.
This device allow parents to check on their baby from anywhere within the GSM network, offering flexibility and convenience. With this device, parents can work, run errands, or engage in other activities without having to constantly worry about their baby, knowing they can easily check in.
With wireless notification features, such as push notifications or SMS alerts ensure that parents are immediately informed of any potential issues or changes in their baby’s condition.
CHAPTER FIVE
5.1 Conclusion
Parents will be able to see their Infants using this baby monitoring device. This system’s primary benefit is that it is easier to use and poses no risk to the infant. This project’s goal, as we briefly touched on in the introduction, is to create an infant monitoring system that is as safe as possible.
In the nut shell, this system is made in the consideration of giving comfort to working parents. People can use the technology to make them more comfortable and quick. Home appliances become connected to GSM network, which make them smart devices as they can work by their own if they are designed in such manner by using sensors.
Working parents will benefit from the module’s implementation since it makes it easier to monitor when their baby is crying.
5.2 Recommendation/Future scope
The proposed system monitors when the baby is crying. It can be enhanced by adding baby’s health monitoring. Parents can also check their babies from another room at home. For short range communication they can use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies.
