It begins with an introduction that is the chapter one which is specifically areas.

Chapter two includes the overview of related literature stating the brief history of computerization of student’s academic record a case study of Imo State Polytechnic.

Chapter three includes definition of system investigation, system analysis and the description of data collection department and the system requirement for the computerized student’s academic record software development.

Chapter four is basically on programming program design, program structure, program implementation and program evaluation and the categories of programming language.

Chapter five, limitation of study, conclusion, recommendation and references were also included. This project is an in-depth look at how a manual or traditional way of writing student’s academic record is changed to a computer base system in orde4r to promote accuracy. Improve time and efficiency and also the problem encountered in the manual system are way lectures and examination academic record in Imo State Polytechnic Umuagwo Ohjai is been prepared and also to analyze the system design and implement a new computerized system that would timely and efficiently process and transit data.

CHAPTER ONE

• INTRODUCTION:

Computer, since its evolution has made considerable impact to various area in our society and world in general, its scientific study discovery and development both in the field of science and technology owed to the strange swiftness, exact and accuracy with its works and carryout computer in many aspect of human endeavor leads to the speed and accurate execution of lengthy ad cumbersome fast (jobs).

Nevertheless, computer has been applied in most fields these days due to its benefit to the following area:

Education: Computers are used as aids students hearing, it acts as a patient teacher, which allows hearing at your own pace.

Medical: Medical record of patients can be stored for Later retrieval though the use of computer thereby assisting in the training of medical history of patients, for appropriate treatment, also due to the emergence of internet, tale-medicine is now possible. This is a situation whereby a patient can be treated over the internet.

Business: Most business and large firms secretaries use a computer package called word processing to write letters, memories and report. A word processing program makes correction, edition of documents, quickly and easily resulting in a neat and readable output also, the emergence of internet has made a business possible that is, buying and selling of product though the internet.

Industry: Some companies employees master job with the aid of computer based training programs which most of the use in simulation technologies and other packages like CAM (Computer Aided manufacture) and CAD (Computer Aided Resign) are used in design and manufacturing of these products.

Other areas of which computer application has been helped are in computerization of some government owned parastatals billing system NITEL and NEAP, Computerization of airline reservation. Due to this and other mentioned benefits and reasons, computer is without break guiding ground (popularity while scientist, artist, engineering, doctors, business and education sectors etc. some computer package use in advising these goals are AUTO CAD Dbase and power point, Microsoft tutor IC. In fact the sky is the Limit for the use of computer.

In addition, it can also help in computerization of Imo State Polytechnic Umuagwo Ohaji, academic record (ISPUOAR).

The adopted manual methods by the examination, records and statistic department formally used in the execution and processing of both exam and lecturer’s record was a time difficult, inaccurate, slow and unreasonable as it goes wilt human labour would create change for eliminating mistakes and over sight accruing as a result of manual preparation of exams and lecturers record.

1.1  STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:

The problem is to investigate the way the school academic record in Imo State Polytechnic Umuagwo, is been prepared and also to analyse the system, design and implement a new computerized system that would timely and effectively process and transmit data.

1.2  OBJECTIVE OF STUDY:

(i)    The computerization of student’s academic record (exam/Lecturer) is the focus of this project work. This study is carried out to examine the existing system (manual) in an attempt to identity its problems and the system required as to surface with relevant facts will be of help management in the preparation of

(ii)   Lecture and examination record. This program (ISPUOAR) is very simple structured to a reasonable extent quite education and overall well documented.

• Fasting up the rate of computing records (exam/lectures) thereby reducing the exams record and statistics department labour research.
• Provision for easy operation and guidance for future research.
• Provision of relict to tedious repetitive electrical work in preparation of records.

1.3  SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

(i)    The significance of this study is to establish a relationship between

computer grade points and the student actual academic performance.

(ii)   It will also reflect the true academic standard of institution, partially reflecting the lecturing and teaching capability of the lecturers involved and how fast the students grasp the essence of what they are being taught.

(iii)  It will also help to eliminate and curb the impression that high grade points are a matter of gender of wealth distribution.

1.4  SCOPE OF STUDY:

This study shows how to change the traditional way of presentation of Imo State Polytechnic academic record to a computerized (automated) mode is of great importance to the management of the school and the record and statistics department.

It goes a long way into help to encounter those problems that proves.

1.5  LIMITATION OF STUDY:

i      Time: Time giving to us to write the project was short.

ii     Finance: The cost of writing the project was very expensive.

iii    Book: I was not able to find some of the books needed for research.

iv    Library: some of the libraries I visited was not equipped with enough books needed for the research.

1.6  DEFINITION OF TERMS:

COMPUTER:  Is an electronic device that can receive a set of instructions, of program and then carryout this problem by performing calculations on numerical data or by manipulating other forms of information.

COMPUTER PROGRAM: Are a set of instruction in a programming language, intended to be executed on a computer to perform a task.

2.0  LITERATURE REVIEW:

According to Hunt and Shelly (1993) in their book of computer was invented for making calculation faster, but over 80% of computing today the application are non mathematical nor numerical or series of logical and meaningful words or even data of any type.  Based on this, Lukman (1991), described computer as the faster machine ever invented by man for calculation and information processing.

Opera (2005), defined computer as an electronic and electro-mechanical devices such as mouse, keyboard, diskette, (drom etc and process them according to set of instruction stored program) and output information through the output device (such as monitor, diskette, plotter, printer, as a speed which surpasses that man she also define the following.

Data:

It is a collection of raw facts and figures. They are in the form of what we need it to be. Data includes letters such as alphabets (AZ) numerical (0-9), charts and diagram relating to an activity, information.

As uncertainty that is reduced when a message is passed.

However, manual operator cannot achieve such speed and accuracy at which computer process and retrieves inform action.

Doris (1987), acknowledge that computer operator accurately with a great speed when processing data.

This makes it possible for a computerized academic record (ISPUOAR) system to provide prompt service to the management thus reducing the time wastage.

Harold (1999) states that the “computer is programmed to handle many different types of information to match the peculiar needs of many organization he emphasized that his vitues of his computer arises from the speed for handling data once it has been inputted and the reliability with which they can repeatedly process information with little or no errors and fatigue.

This reveals that when a computer base system is used to replace a manual system, it will promote accuracy, improve time and efficiency. Also the problems encountered in the manual system are overcome nowadays, the computer system has become an indispensable tools in every day life in less than five decades ago the world saw a monstrous scientific curiosity called ENIAC the computer system improved into a small chip, perhaps miniature but powerful machine with deep tented spread across all areas of human endeavour, daring mankind to ignore it at its own race is being confronted by the continuous emergence.

Of complexities of the computer system, the world has become an entity drive by:

• An increasing speed of technological advancement.
• An increasing need for skilled manpower
• An evolving world of computer technology.

According to oligopoly (1994) computer application has a number of other private and public schools. In the very near future 80% of job seekers would be expected to be computer literate more so, the use of computer is being extended to different prostates and institutions.

Computerization as stated by Ibeh in (1993) could be defined as an operation or procedure, programmed instructions that serve for clarity of executing computing and storing with a computer system.

Therefore, computerization is the introduction of computer to the processing of data which are originally done manually or otherwise improvement of a system to a system to a newly define system.

Base on this, the computerization of Imo State Polytechnic Umuagwo Ohaji Students Academic Record (ISPUOSAR) will eliminate the existing manual processing of lecture/exam record thereby spreading up the processing.

According to Richard and Jeffrey (1988) “computation is the process of performing mathematical operation on data. It is the only data processing technique that produces new data (information/output). It is the ability to perform calculation quickly and limitless millions of multiplication ion problems for second that gives computer their reputation of miraculous tools.

John (1997:17) a computer scientist and a writer to the success of a computer magazine, once stated a major computer merit that cannot be lost in the computer speed shown in the processing of data within few seconds which when rated and compared with human labour, would normally take days, weeks, months and even years.

Office banks academic institutions etc are therefore advised and encouraged to embank on computerization.

Olatitude (1992) prompted in his article that computer application has lot of benefits in computerization, data processing, data transmission and storage of data in offices, which exams, record and statistic office in tertiary institution like polytechnic is included an implied.

Francies (1993), in his theory and problems on introduction to computer science comment like so many other creation of the human mind, the world of computer is response to a well documented need for fast and accurate processing of large volume of information.

Anderson, stated that the result of not using the computer when is should be used have reduced administrative efficiency, incurring of unnecessary cost and organization changes will be made useless.

This further supports the saying that computerization usually requires a period of planning. Very often, computer systems are not brought into the resource utilization or simply to do a job that cannot be done otherwise.

People often say that computerization leads to loss of job, this assertion is not true according to Ezenano (1993), who stated that because misconception of what the computerization of different manual system has caused many workers redundant by taking over the job rather computerization have opened up areas of works for both users and manufacturers.

Often people whose jobs were taken over as a result of computerization have always been absorted in the new computer department after undergoing training in information technology (IT)

CHAPTER THREE

3.0  RESEARCH METHODOLOGY:

Imo State Polytechnic Umuagwo Ohaji was established in 1968 (precisely 31 years ago) as Michael Okpara College of Agriculture, Umuagwo.

The Imo State of Nigeria established the institution in the memory of one of the Nigeria heroes after the impendence (1960). The name of the institution was changed to Michael Okpara College of Agriculture and Technology in the year 2006.

It was later changed to Imo State Polytechnic Umuagwo Ohaji following the take over of the institution by the state government with effect from 20^th April 2007. The name of the institution now becomes Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo Ohaji, P.M.B 1472 Owerri.
